Rainbow Partners with Coder Kids to Expand the Program and Provide Underserved Youth with Skills for Tech-Driven Careers
Many of those with limited means and access to a tech-enriched education may find themselves at a disadvantage when competing for the jobs of the future. An estimated 21% of American children live in poverty, with only 30% of those born into poverty growing up to earn a middle-class income, and even fewer (4%) earning a high income. A contributing factor is the disparity of technology access between rich and poor households, known as the “digital divide.”
Rainbow Housing Assistance Corporation (Rainbow) is a nonprofit organization which provides service-enriched housing and workforce development programs for rental housing communities throughout the United States. Rainbow has partnered with Coder Kids to help bridge the digital divide. Coder Kids provides afterschool coding classes and summer camps where students learn to create games using coding languages such as Scratch, Python, Unity, and more.
Rainbow has expanded Coder Kids, which was previously established in Houston, to serve low-income families in College Station, Texas. The unique program has been met with great success and received requests from other apartment communities hoping to offer similar resident services. Coder Kids has found particular success with girls – 70% of the most recent classes have been filled by females.
