On March 29, Redstone Golf Course in Humble, Texas played host to some of golf’s top players for this year’s Shell Houston Open. Thanks to a generous grant from the United States Golf Association (read the full press release here), 35 youth from Rainbow-served Haverstock Hills were also present to witness the festivities. Attending the Shell Houston Open was the first in a series of events in which the youth of that community participated. First Tee, in partnership with the Houston Golf Association (HGA), will offer their youth programming to Haverstock children interested in learning about the game and its benefits.

Those in attendance were in for an eventful afternoon. Upon arrival, the youth were greeted with a variety of activities familiarizing them with the game of golf. Resources from First Tee and HGA used the time to put on a mini-clinic playing skill-related games, using specialty equipment, and putting techniques – all on the green for the first hole on the course. In addition, HGA had arranged an autograph meet-and-greet session with pro golfers Michael Thompson, Heath Slocum, James Driscoll, and Chris DiMarco as well as Houston Texans Quarterback T.J. Yates, Wide Receiver Kevin Walter, Defensive End Tim Bulman, and Center Chris Myers who were onsite to raise money for charity.

Rainbow Housing Assistance Corporation would again like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to the USGA for their commitment to helping elevate the youth of Haverstock Hills out of poverty, introducing them to new experiences, and teaching valuable life lessons.
