Citizenship: Berenice Builds a Foundation for the Future

Berenice Lujuan Zubia approached Rainbow with the ambitious goal of obtaining United States citizenship, a pursuit which represented far more than legal status; she sought access to better employment opportunities, secure enhanced rights and benefits, and desired to serve as an inspiring example to her family. Her citizenship journey presented a significant challenge: the language barrier, as English was not her first language. Despite this difficulty, Berenice demonstrated remarkable courage, understanding that achieving citizenship would fundamentally transform her opportunities in the U.S., enabling her to vote and fully participate in civic life.

The Rainbow Resident Services Coordinator (RSC) provided essential guidance and encouragement throughout Berenice’s process. The RSC assisted her in enrolling in Rainbow’s Citizenship program, providing clear explanations of the requirements, timeline, and available resources, including study materials and practice tests.Throughout her enrollment, the RSC offered consistent check-ins and support, helping her navigate the program components. While Berenice utilized the formal curriculum, her ultimate success was driven by her extraordinary initiative and self-directed learning, supplementing program resources with independent study and practice.

On February 12, Berenice achieved her dream, successfully obtaining U.S. citizenship. This achievement fulfilled multiple goals simultaneously, opening doors to previously inaccessible employment opportunities and securing her political voice. Most meaningful to Berenice personally, she achieved her goal of serving as an inspiring example to her son and family, proving that determination and education can overcome any obstacle, regardless of age. Her story powerfully exemplifies how accessible citizenship education programs, combined with individual dedication, can empower immigrants to achieve full economic and civic participation in American life.
